The Workout Buddy: A Key to Fitness

Finding a workout buddy is finding a sure way to improve your level of fitness.

In a previous article, I outlined how being overweight or obese is NOT ok. If I publish information regarding a condition describing it as negative, shouldn't I also publish information on how to combat it? I have done so in multiple cases in topics ranging as far as improving your health and fitness, staying healthy at a young age, finding healthy fast food, and even a helpful guide for starting out a running workout, and I will continue to provide this information.

To ensure that I do not portray the acme of hypocrisy, I will outline my own physical condition here:

I am 5'7" and 140 pounds. I run between 3-6 times per week, although I despise gyms and generally avoid them. I can bench press a little more than my own body weight, and I usually score between 275 and 295 on the Army Physical Fitness Test out of a maximum score of 300. I can run two miles in less than 12 minutes, and I am committed to continually improving my level of physical shape (so that, when I have kids, they have to keep up with me).

I usually run alone, because I cannot find anyone that wants to run in the heat of the summer or the cold of the winter. Sometimes, as often as once a week, I get unmotivated early in a run and randomly quit. Sometimes I feel that it's bad to continue to push yourself when your mind clearly has no interest in it that day, and so I stop. I do not run alone by choice, but because I know that if I wait for a running buddy, I will probably be waiting until well after I should have already run.

Acquiring a running buddy, however, is one of the best things that you can do for your running, unless you have found the even-better alternative of a track club, or are still young enough to stay in school and run with your local cross country team. Buddies are there to motivate you when you get tired; I usually run with a friend who is not quite as fast as me, but he often chooses to keep going when I would have thrown in the towel, and this makes me better than I would be alone.

If you can find a buddy who is just a bit faster than you and willing to run with you, you are doing youself a big favor. Buddies are great for just about every type of run, from long runs to speed workouts, because they provide someone to compete with and push with. When you want to stay inside and eat potato chips on a given day, your running buddy or other type of training buddy is still going to call and ask you if you're coming, and that makes it that much harder to say no.
