Neurontin is a Viable Treatment for Chronic Nerve Pain, but It is Not for Everyone

Neurontin, also known generically as Gabapentin, is an anticonvulsant drug which is used for seizure control; however, it has many off-label uses. One of the most common uses for Neurontin is for treating chronic pain. This factoid writer uses Neurontin for sciatic nerve pain, but this drug is also used to treat chronic pain associated with chronic fatigue syndrome, multiple sclerosis, and fibromyalgia.

Neurontin is also prescribed for restless leg syndrome, diabetic neuropathy, and interstitial cystitis. Diabetic neuropathy is a condition which causes nerve pain from the effects of diabetes on the nerves and blood vessels in certain parts of the body. Interstitial cystitis is a very painful condition of the urinary bladder which causes bladder spasms.

Another wonderful property of Neurontin is that it can be used to treat depression, because it acts just like an antidepressant. Many anti-seizure medications are used as antidepressants.  People with sleep disorders are also helped by Neurontin. This drug helps to get rid of pain because it stabilizes unstable nerves. In other words, nerves sometimes misfire and cause pain. Neurontin slows down the nerve impulses that come from the spinal cord to the nerves on the skin. This factoid author had severe pain that involved the right big toe and the toe next to it. Neurontin totally took that pain away. The simplest way to explain how this drug works to relieve nerve pain is that Neurontin slows down the over-excited nerve endings.

Neurontin side effects

For many people, Neurontin is like a miracle drug.  It dramatically relieves pain, but it does have some side effects.  One of the common side effects of Neurontin is that it causes water retention. If you take Neurontin and you notice that you have gained a few pounds, or if you have been dieting and you have trouble losing weight, it could be the Neurontin holding fluid in your tissues.

Not everyone can take Neurontin.  Some people experience nausea and vomiting, as well as vertigo and clumsiness.  Some people may experience hoarseness, and swelling of the face, tongue and lips. The tongue may push out of the mouth. Tremors may occur in the hands and fingers.  It’s not common, but severe symptoms such as abnormal thoughts, confusion and chest pain may occur. It is also possible that people with epilepsy may have worsening of seizures. Mood changes may occur also, such as irritability and hostility.

Serious side effects of Neurontin are possible, but not common to everyone. Your doctor will prescribe Neurontin if the benefit of the drug outweighs any side effects that you may have. If weight gain or difficulty losing weight is the worst side effect that you have, it might be to your advantage to take Neurontin for chronic pain or depression.  However, if you have any of the more serious side effects, this drug may not be for you.

This factoid author has only lost 4 pounds in 2 months, but the drug is so beneficial that it is worth the extra effort to lose weight. If you take Neurontin and experience bad side effects, contact your doctor immediately.

Bottom line

Neurontin is usually taken at bedtime because it can cause dizziness if taken during the day when you are up and around. Always take it as directed. If you suffer from fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome or from chronic sciatic nerve pain, ask your doctor if Neurontin can be an option for you.
