Ikaria Study Reveals Greek Coffee Increases Longevity

A study conducted in Greece on the island of Ikaria has helped researchers discover why the island’s inhabitants may have the world’s highest longevity. Daily consumption of Greek coffee, commonly known as Turkish and Arab coffee has been found to help keep blood vessels and arteries in healthy working order.

A research study conducted at the University of Athens has revealed that traditional coffee known as ‘ellinkos’ (the Greek) can be attributed to increased longevity.  These results came about during a study called the ‘Ikaria Study’ in which Greek researchers set about to discover why inhabitants of the Greek island of Ikaria may have some of the highest longevity rates in the world.

During the Ikaria Study it was discovered that one of the biggest characteristics shared between the inhabitants of Ikaria was that traditional Greek coffee is consumed every day.  Greek coffee, also known as Arab or Turkish coffee, differs from store bought coffee because the coffee beans are roasted, finely ground to be boiled in a pot usually alongside sugar, than served in a cup where the grounds are allowed to settle.  Greek coffee (most commonly known as Turkish coffee) does not differ in the fact that it is a different type of coffee bean but rather a different form of preparation. 

All types of coffee have antioxidants but Greek researchers have noted that Greek/Turkish coffee have higher amounts of cafestol and kahweol which have been found to have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.  As well as Greek coffee tends to have moderate caffeine levels.  During the study Greek researchers examined how daily consumption rates of coffee had an effect on the population’s elderly.  In a research study consisting of 142 individuals aged 66-91 years old coffee consumption rates were evaluated in order to separate the individuals from low, medium, to high coffee drinkers.  Further evaluations were made to adjust the test results for age, sex, weight/height, smoking habits, cardiovascular disease, hypertension rates, and diabetes. 

What the researchers found was that individuals who drank the highest amount of boiled Greek/Turkish coffee on a habitual basis had better endothelial functions in comparison with those who drank other types of coffee.  The endothelial are a group of cells that line themselves with the blood vessels.  When these cells do not function properly it can lead to serious effects such as hardening of the blood vessels.  The Greek researchers also discovered that consuming traditional coffee also greatly improved the elasticity of arteries especially for individuals suffering from high blood pressure.     

Greek coffee was first introduced by the Ottoman Turks and today has become one of the most essential parts of Greek life.  Everything in Greece begins with a cup of coffee.

Wouldn’t it be interesting if Greek coffee was the real secret to the health benefits of the Mediterranean Diet? With everything I have read about the Mediterranean diet being so healthy, I don’t  remember ever reading about the coffee.
